Kieni

Kieni Cooperative in Kenya

The producer

Our first purchase from Kieni was in 2010, and we've bought coffee from them every year since. Kieni lies in Kenya's coffee heartland, where coffee farming is part of daily life for most people, even those with other jobs. Around 1,000 cooperative members deliver cherries to the Kieni factory, which has consistently been one of the highest-paying factories in Kenya throughout our years working with them.

Processing

The coffee is pulped, then floated and sorted by quality before fermentation overnight. The mucilage is washed off the next day, sometimes followed by a short second fermentation in clean river water. After a final soak, the coffee dries on raised beds for twelve to eighteen days, covered during strong sun or rain, until it reaches the right moisture level for milling and export.
