Kenneth Capell’s appreciation for coffee started in 2010, during an internship in China. It also marked the start of his experiments with home roasting. “I started roasting at home in the oven, and it wasn’t exactly optimal,” he shares with a smile. “If I had the space for a roaster, I might take it up again—unless painting takes over completely, which I think it will.”
This piece is inspired by a trip to Florence. Reflecting on the experience, Capell shares his thoughts on the herd mentality in the world, where everyone seems to want the same things. “It’s a bit dull when people have this mimetic behaviour sometimes. And it’s also a reminder to myself.”
At 39, Capell has not always been artistic, though he enjoyed drawing when he was younger. It was only three years ago that he began exploring art, starting with experiments across different mediums like acrylics and airbrush. For Capell, it has been a process of playful exploration, working to find a style that resonates with him.
His subjects are inspired by what he’s passionate about, though he tries not to approach his work with a rigid plan. “Sometimes my brother has pointed out things in my art that I could see afterwards, but hadn’t thought about during the process,” he says.
You can find Kenneth Capell’s artworks in our shops at Carlsberg Byen, Guldsmedgade (Aarhus), and Collective Bakery.
